Round Rock dates back to the 1850s as a settlement named Brushy, located near the banks of Brushy Creek at the natural fording area by the round rock. By 1851, Brushy had established the Brushy Creek Post Office. In 1854, the settlement had to be renamed as there was another settlement called Brushy in Texas, so the town was renamed Round Rock after the large rock in the middle of Brushy Creek. As of August 24, 1854, Round Rock became the official name of the settlement. In 1876, the International and Great Northern Railroad forced the commercial area of Round Rock to the east, leaving the original settlement to be referred to as Old Town. Today, Old Town exists as a historical area with several restored businesses.
In addition to Old Town, Chisholm Trail, one of the most famous mid-nineteenth century routes for transporting cattle to the Midwest, is a significant part of Round Rock’s history. Chisholm Trail was laid out in 1865 by a man named Jesse Chisholm, starting from the Canadian River near Yukon, Oklahoma proceeding north to Wichita, Kansas. Before Chisholm decided to turn the trail into a cattle route, it originally acted as a route to trade goods with the American Indians. In 1866, the route became officially known as the Chisholm Trail when Jesse Chisholm took a wagon train of goods plus 250 cattle over the route. Round Rock quickly became known for its rich prairie soils, which were perfect for growing cotton, and contributed to an agricultural boost in the early twentieth century.
